- Services
1.1. AIJS functions as a cooperative fund rather than an insurance provider. While it does not guarantee burial plots, AIJS is committed to raising and maintaining sufficient funds to provide burial plots for all eligible members.
1.2. The AIJS Executive Committee (EC), in collaboration with its members, works to ensure the sustainability of the fund.
1.3. AIJS will conduct regular review of its services, and strive to expand them, ensuring transparency and continues engagements. - Service Coverage
2.1. Currently, AIJS serves Muslims residing in Canberra and Queanbeyan.
2.2. The service coverage will be reviewed periodically, with the goal of expanding the scope of services offered. - Initial Membership Fees
3.1. The initial membership fee is $150 per person or family member from 1st of October, 2024.
3.2. AIJS reserves the right to review and adjust fees periodically to accommodate the increasing cost of burial plots. Any fee increases will apply only to new members. - Membership Conditions
4.1. Any Muslim residing in Canberra and Queanbeyan is eligible to apply for membership.
4.2. Citizenship or permanent residency is not a requirement for membership.
4.3. A waiting period of 12 months from the date of joining applies to all members. During this period, AIJS will not provide a burial plot in the event of death.
4.4. Membership commences upon receipt of the full membership fee and membership benefit commences after the completion of any applicable waiting period.
4.5. Membership is non-transferable under any circumstances.
- Mandatory Contributions
5.1. AIJS will review the balance of vacant burial plots and cash reserves on a quarterly basis. If the balance is insufficient, AIJS will require a mandatory contribution of $150 per member to ensure continued service.
5.2. Members are required to pay this contribution promptly to retain their membership status. For members who have been with AIJS for less than 1 year at the time of the contribution demanded, the contribution will be due on the 1st anniversary of their membership. - End of Membership
6.1. Membership will be cancelled in the event of a breach of these Terms & Conditions or failure to pay the required contribution within three months of notification.
6.2. If a member relocates outside the AIJS coverage area, their membership will be automatically cancelled six months after their relocation to another state or territory.
6.3. If a member wishes to cancel his or her membership, they must notify AIJS in writing. All fees or contributions paid are non-refundable.
6.4. Partial payments will result in the cancellation of membership for all family members. Due to difficulty in identifying which member is unpaid. - Ongoing Responsibilities
7.1. AIJS will use its best efforts to acquire and maintain a sustainable balance of vacant burial plots and sufficient cash reserves to ensure continuity of its services.
7.2. Members who have contributed a cumulative total of $5000 per member or more over the lifetime of their membership will be exempt from any future mandatory contribution.
7.3. It is the member’s responsibility to keep their contact information up to date. - Access to Services
8.1. AIJS will not provide direct payments to members. It will engage and pay the necessary services providers.
8.2. A burial plot will be provided in Canberra, Queanbeyan, or surrounding areas based on availability and the order in which plots were purchased. The deceased’s family will not be able to select the location if multiple locations are available.
8.3. Grave specifications and funeral rituals will comply with the Sunnah and ACT legislation. AIJS will exclusively support Islamic funeral services.
8.4. Members are entitled to cover only the standard and essential costs associated with burial, in accordance with the Sunnah.
8.5. A death certificate must be provided to AIJS.
8.6. If a member passes away outside ACT & Queanbeyan region, AIJS will only cover the burial plot within ACT & Queanbeyan for the deceased member.
8.7. AIJS will not reimburse any other costs under any circumstances. - AIJS Rights
9.1. The AIJS Executive Committee reserves the right to amend these Terms & Conditions as necessary.
9.2. Any amendments will be made in compliance with Sharia obligations, as advised by the Sharia committee.
